Here is a list of useful medicines and dressings with a description of their uses. All are quite cheap and worth stocking at home in readiness for minor illnesses. Keep them in a box or cupboard with a lock and key or store them well out of reach of children.
Soluble Aspirin Tablets
For adults only. Good for headaches, colds, sore throats and painful bruises.
Paracetamol Mixture
e.g. Calpol/Disprol. For relief of fever in children.
Sedative Cough Linctus
e.g. Benylin/Actifed. For dry or painful coughs but not caused by common colds.
Menthol Crystals
Add to hot water to make steam inhalations, for treating catarrh and dry painful coughs.Vapour rub e.g.Vick. Again for steam inhalations. Also useful for children with stuffy noses or dry coughs. Rub on chest.
Ephedrine Nose Drops
For runny noses in children over 1 year old. Use before meals and at night but not for more than 4 days.
Antiseptic Solution
e.g. TCP/Savlon/Dettol. One teaspoonful diluted in warm water for cleansing cuts and grazes. For treating septic spots or sores etc.
Calamine Lotion
For dabbing (not rubbing) on insect bites, sun burn or chickenpox spots.
Dressing strips
For minor cuts. Plus 3″ wide crepe bandages to keep dressings in place or support sprained or bruised joints.
Cotton Wool
For cleansing cuts and grazes.
Tweezers
For removing splinters.
